BPC-157: What It Is and What the Research Has Examined

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound 157) is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide derived from a protective protein sequence found in human gastric juice. It has been studied mainly in animal models in relation to tissue repair, gut health and injury recovery.

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound 157) is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide derived from a protective protein sequence found in human gastric juice. It has been studied extensively in animal models, with very limited human data, and research has focused particularly on tissue repair, gut health and recovery from injury.

Mechanism of Action

Preclinical research suggests BPC-157 may act through several pathways. Animal and laboratory studies have reported upregulation of growth hormone receptors, angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), changes in nitric oxide synthesis, and interaction with the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems. How far these findings apply to people is not yet known.

What the Research Shows

The majority of BPC-157 research has been conducted in rodent models, where researchers have reported consistent findings across a range of injury and inflammation models: tendon and ligament repair, muscle healing, gut inflammation and ulceration, bone healing, and neurological recovery following trauma. These preclinical findings have driven clinical interest, but controlled human trials are lacking.

Areas of Research Interest

Research interest in BPC-157 has centred on three areas: musculoskeletal repair (tendon, ligament and joint), gastrointestinal models (inflammatory bowel conditions, gut integrity), and recovery after overtraining or surgery. None of these is an established indication in humans.

  • Combinations with other peptides, such as TB-500, have not been validated in human trials
  • Long-term human safety data are limited
