DSIP: Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide and the Science of Deep Sleep Architecture
DSIP was named after early research reporting increased delta wave sleep. Decades of research have examined that finding, with mixed and mostly small human studies. Here is what the research has looked at.
By UAE Peptide Clinic Research Desk
DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a nonapeptide (9 amino acids) first isolated from rabbit cerebroventricular fluid in 1977. It was named after early research reporting that it increased delta wave sleep, the slow-wave phase associated with growth hormone secretion and physical recovery. Later research has examined this finding further, with mixed and mostly small human studies.
Mechanism of Action
DSIP is not a classical sedative. Research suggests it may act on the neurobiological conditions around deep sleep, including corticotrophin release, somatostatin signalling and the sleep-wake rhythm. Laboratory studies have also reported effects on LH release and antioxidant activity, suggesting a broader regulatory role than sleep alone.
Areas of Research Interest
Research on DSIP has looked at chronic sleep disruption, disrupted circadian rhythm (including shift work and jet lag), stress-related sleep fragmentation, and its relationship with the GH axis. Because deep sleep is the main window for natural GH secretion, some physicians discuss DSIP alongside GH-axis peptides, but this combination has not been tested in controlled trials and any decision rests with the prescribing physician.
- Nonapeptide first isolated in 1977, with a decades-long research record
- Studied in relation to delta wave (deep) sleep architecture; not a classical sedative
- Laboratory research has examined LH release and antioxidant pathways
- Any use alongside GH-axis protocols is a physician decision
