GHK-Cu: Copper Peptide, Skin Regeneration and the Science Behind It

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide examined in experimental studies of tissue biology, with limitations in human clinical evidence.

By UAE Peptide Clinic Research Desk

GHK-Cu (Glycyl-L-Histidyl-L-Lysine Copper) is a naturally occurring tripeptide-copper complex found in human plasma, saliva, and urine. Its concentration declines with age — from approximately 200 nanograms per millilitre in youth to 80 ng/mL by the age of 60. That decline tracks closely with the deterioration of tissue repair capacity, collagen synthesis, and antioxidant defence that characterises skin and systemic ageing.

Mechanism of Action

GHK-Cu has been studied as a modulator of gene expression. Research has reported effects on over 300 genes related to tissue remodelling, including those governing collagen and elastin synthesis, metalloproteinase regulation, stem cell mobilisation, and antioxidant enzyme activity. It has also been studied in relation to TGF-beta signalling, which is central to scar formation and wound repair. Unlike peptides that act through a single receptor, GHK-Cu is described in the literature as a broad biological signal for tissue maintenance.

Clinical Applications

GHK-Cu is used both topically and subcutaneously, depending on the clinical objective. Topical application has been studied for skin texture, wrinkles and wound healing. Subcutaneous use has been examined in research on systemic tissue maintenance, hair follicles and wound healing at internal sites. It is also one of the three peptides in the GLOW Stack, alongside TB-500 and BPC-157.
